About

Small Tech Shop provides friendly, local, human IT support for small businesses.  The shop is located above Rozi's in the Detroit Cook Building, #306.

My name is Corey Snipes.  I have worked in tech for 30 years, and the industry is in a bad place right now.  When I started, our devices and software were designed for the people who used them.  These days, everything is designed to enrich giant corporations, deliver ads to our eyeballs, and to track our actions and relationships.  These days, tech is something that is done to us, rather than done for us.

It doesn't have to be this way.

The fundamentals of technology are still open and available to us.  Our PCs can run software that serves us, the users, instead of Microsoft and Google.  Our files and photos and emails can be private and under our control, instead of training corporate algorithms and being mined for our activities, thoughts, and relationships.  Our business data and relationships can be handled carefully and securely, without exposing our customers' sensitive information to third parties.  We can control where our information is, and who gets to see it.  And best of all, we can spend a lot less money.

I created the Small Tech Shop to help people reclaim their technology.  I specialize in open source operating systems (e.g., Linux), internet technologies, business tools (e.g., NextCloud), and systems administration.  I collaborate with a small group of local technology people who also specialize in open source and small tech solutions for business, and together we can support everything you need to run your business IT on ethical technology: office networking, hardware repair, printer support, backups, and monitoring.

If you would like to make changes in your business tech, the Small Tech Shop can help.  We can help you replace Microsoft and Google with technology solutions that are stable, secure, user-friendly, and privacy-focused.  We can help you significantly reduce your IT spend, and get better outcomes with careful, incremental changes.  Explore our services to learn more.
